Candida

What is Candida?
Candida albicans is a species of yeast or fungus which occurs naturally in the human digestive and genital tracts. In small numbers it makes up a part of the normal human gut ecology or ‘intestinal flora’, but when it is allowed to overgrow and increase its population it becomes pathogenic, causing all manner of symptoms. When the gut flora is imbalanced, this is known as ‘dysbiosis’.

Candida overgrowth is fairly common, especially after taking antibiotics, which kill off the ‘bad’ bugs as well as the ‘good’ bugs (beneficial bacteria), allowing candida albicans to proliferate and a state of dysbiosis to arise. Other than widespread antibiotic use, contributing factors may be the use of the oral contraceptive pill and various other prescription medications, a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar, and a modern lifestyle (stress, pollution etc) that does little to encourage optimal digestive health.

Treatment for Candida
The two major branches of treatment are Diet and Nutritional Supplementation.
It is not enough to do either one without the other.
Diet focuses on ‘starving’ the candida by removal of sugars and yeasts; supplemental protocol works to kill off the candida and replace beneficial bacteria, re-programming the gut ecology.

How long?
Everyone is different, and the length of treatment depends upon the extent of the candida overgrowth. Generally the minimum time for treatment is 6 weeks of dietary changes and one month of supplementation.
