Thrush on Nipples
Thrush on your nipples and in your baby’s
mouth is caused by an overgrowth of the organism Candida albicans. This is the
same organism that causes vaginal thrush, and is a yeast that is a normal part
of our microbial flora, but when it gets out of balance and has a population
explosion, it can cause very unpleasant symptoms such as itching, pain and the
production of white discharge.
Causes can include antibiotic use, hormonal
changes, high stress, high sugar diets, and the uses of some medications
including the oral contraceptive pill and corticosteroids.
Once the cause is
established as being definitively candida, herbal and homeobotanical remedies
can be used to kill off the candida and boost the immune system, while probiotics
are given to recolonise the environment with beneficial bacteria. In the case
of the nipple, we use herbal formulas topically and CandiEase Drops internally,
alongside probiotics.
In the case of the baby, the CandiEase drops are also
used, alongside BabyBiotics, and the same herbs as are used for mama’s nipples
can be used to wash out baby’s mouth, such as an infusion of calendula.
