Pregnancy Help

Fluid Retention

Fluid Retention (oedema) is a problem for many particularly in the last 10 weeks of pregnancy, when half of the extra 3-6 litres of fluid common to pregnancy is retained.
Generally it is not a serious problem unless it is accompanied by elevated blood pressure or protein in the urine.
If these accompany it it could be an early sign of toxaemia.
You should have your blood pressure and urine checked.
Contact your mid-wife or doctor.

Treatment

  • Drink more water, it will flush out your kidneys and create a diuretic effect.
  • Herbal Teas such as Dandelion Leaf are great gentle diuretics.
  • Wear flat, comfortable shoes and avoid standing for long periods.
  • Rest regularly and put your feet up so the swelling can go down.
  • Pregnancy Massage with Lymphatic drainage from a professional massage therapist.
  • Quintessence Oedema Drops  - to reduce swelling and excess fluid
